Pisa was a bit of a surprise.
Scott, of course, wanted to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa and see the architectural marvel so we decided to go for a day trip from Lucca.
It was a really easy day trip and we were incredibly surprised by how few tourists there were. Way less than we expected! Though it was still incredibly amusing to see everyone trying to take the classic ‘holding the Leaning Tower of Pisa’ photo! (Also can we suggest, if you really need this photo, the photographer is the one who should move to line it up not keep yelling vague instructions at the person! Though that did keep us very entertained!)
Climbing the tower was not at all how I expected. It actually is on a noticeable lean as you climb it! It actually made me feel really sick, I had to hold onto both sides of the wall to stop myself feeling so wobbly!
Scott was fascinated by the tower, especially how worn the steps were from all the people walking up them. It was interesting to see how quickly the worn part of the step would change sides depending on the lean of the tower…you actually could not help yourself but walk in that same spot!
It was incredible up on top and the lean is so noticeable, I think especially as you can see the horizon, makes you realise what an angle you are on! It was a lot of fun to climb though, even if afterwards we had to sit down for a while for me to stop feeling so sick!!
The Cathedral is beautiful but it’s also worth visiting the Baptisery. This octagonal shaped building was gorgeous and every 30 minutes there is a vocal demonstration which was very cool! A guard comes out and sings, it echoes around the Baptisery and ends up sounding like there are heaps of people singing…kind of develops into a ringing sound.
Pisa was actually a fascinating place to visit. I was expecting a very touristy, loads of people place but was pleasantly surprised with it. Though I imagine a lot of that was because we were there in low season! Was a great place for a day trip and it’s pretty cool to have climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa!
